While digging through the archive of Laura Gilkey's website, ShiningHalf.com, I found some cool thoughts from her on soulbonding (definition here) back in 2002!

Rogan: First of all, we are not Kelly Turnbull on Bluesky. We aren't on Bluesky and never will be. We just linked her post as a silly multi joke.

In all seriousness, though, "People live in my head and I want to make it everyone else’s problem" is a significant reason why we write. (And as kids, it was like, almost ALL the reason. Now it's just a little over half.)

Sneak: While Mori was digging through old soulbonding pages for Madgic #4, we stumbled on the origin of "outsourcing"!

Coined By: Laura Gilkey (AKA Half-Esper Laura)
What it Means: It describes a soulbond (a fictional character that someone forms a relationship with) that comes from media created by an outside party.
Time Used: May 2002-?
Locations Used: Soulbonding arenas (websites, soulbonding Livejournal groups); seems to have fallen out of favor with the newer generations where soulbonding kinda got assimilated into the greater plural arena.

lb_lee: a kludge of the wheelchair disability sign and the transgender symbol, adorned with the words Trans Gender Cyborg (cyborg)
Rogan: I have been working on an essay about being a cyborg, and it's led me to a lot of interesting readings! So since I am sick and don't have a lot to do, nonfiction cyborg linkdump! (With bad citations because I am dumb with plague right now.)

There are a lot more of these than I thought. Including one plural citation, We Other Fairies by Xavia Publius at the bottom. )

[personal profile] monsterqueers made an essay, 'What To Do When Your Source Upsets You' for fictionkin and fictive folk (mainly outsourced) about engaging with the media that informs your sense of self, how to recognize when it's hurting you, and what you can do about it.

[personal profile] rax made a cool experimental photo comic on plurality and a '90s board game called Tower of the Wizard King!

[community profile] pluralstories  now has over 100 entries in its catalog! Yay!

Turns out I was wrong about Sandra J. Hocking and company making the first medical multi self-help book; Living With Your Selves was beaten out by 1991's Multiple Personality Gift, by Jacklyn Pia, which apparently did get printed by R & E Publishing, was 60 pages, and seems to have been posted online. Unfortunately, though it's interesting as a historical artifact, I can't really recommend it.

Inspired by a conversation with [personal profile] monsterqueers.

Even though we came to plurality by way of soulbonding (that is, artists who talked to their characters), over the years, we got into the habit of downplaying our own fictivity.

Let's talk about it. )

More pluralwiki!  This time it's the soulbonding community on LJ, for folks who had relationships to fictional characters.

"A Robust Connection to Fiction" --from the community's subheading (2009, January 1).

The primary LJ comm for soulbonders; it was created on January 2, 2002 (soulbonding, 2009 January 1), and deleted between January 18, 2018 (soulbonding, 2019 January 18), and June 20, 2018 (Lee, 2018).  Its archive appears to have no back-ups, except for a few stray archives in the Wayback Machine; it is lost.

This is kinda a big expansion of our old tumblr post, A Very Brief Sloppy History of Soulbonding.  We wanted to expand it and make something proper out of it! ^_^

"If you write enough and you love what you're writing, sometimes the characters will take over and seem both real and very important to you. It's apparently a common thing. Being a bunch of confused teenagers, we labeled this phenomenon 'soulbonding'" (Scully Raincrystal, 2006 February 22).

This can range from a sense of characters having their own voice, to a person from fiction becoming a fronting system member who engages in daily life. Soulbonders may cover the full plural/singlet spectrum.

This code was for soulbonders! (That is, folks who felt emotional resonance with media characters.  This ranged from feeling like a character "wrote itself" to said character being a fronting system member like any other.)

Neither the Soulbond Code nor the Multi Code have been really updated in fifteen years or more!  I found myself wondering, maybe it'd be neat to try and smoosh them together and overhaul them into a plural code! @_@ What do you think?  Do people even use those codes anymore?  I guess it'd just be for fun...

Oh wow holy crap, I wasn't wrong about soulbonding being deleted super recently; Google still has cached pages from late May!  It was clearly JUST purged!

Crazy.

The LJ soulbonding comm has been purged recently--within the past year, tops.  But since I've had to trawl through it for records pretty regularly up until now, it was probably within the last six months or so.

I'm kinda sad, honestly.  There was a lot of community history there, and now it's mostly just gone.  As far as I know, there was no archive made here on DW.  Obviously we've scraped and downloaded about everything there that we wanted, because we're records-hoarding paranoids, but other people probably didn't have a chance to do so.

On the other hand, I guess now our first explorations into plurality via soulbonding are gone, which might be just as well.  I didn't have the heart to delete them, even though they were embarrassing and my opinions and such have changed a lot in the ensuing decade plus. (Random factoid: we ended up on Encyclopedia Dramatica from some of that stuff, which is kinda hilarious since what we ended up on ED for was kinda random and silly?  Nothing for me to really be ashamed of.)
